How to Create a Pin on Pinterest (Step by Step, 2026)
Updated
Creating a Pin takes about two minutes: upload an image, add a title, description and link, choose a board, and publish. Getting a Pin that people actually click takes a little more thought, so this guide covers both the buttons and the choices behind them.
How to create a Pin on desktop
- Log in to Pinterest.
- Click Create at the top left. On a business account, open the menu and choose Create Pin.
- Click the upload icon to choose an image from your computer, or drag it into the upload window. You can select up to 10 images; each one becomes its own Pin.
- Fill in the title, description and link, and choose a board (all covered below).
- Optionally tag up to 10 related topics, and on a business account, schedule it up to 30 days ahead.
- Click Publish.
How to create a Pin in the app
- Open the Pinterest app and log in.
- Tap the + icon at the bottom, then Pin.
- Choose an image from your phone, or tap the camera icon to take one.
- Tap Next, then fill in the same details as on desktop.
- Tap Create.

What to put in each field
Title
The title is the most important words you write. In our study of 4,161 published pins:
- Titles of 55–69 characters were saved much more often than 40–54 character titles. Short titles under 40 characters did worst: a longer title has room for the detail that makes a pin worth saving.
- Titles that start with a number (“7 ways to…”) were saved 2.3× as often as titles with no number, with little change in clicks.
- Titles phrased as a question were saved far less often. Keep the question for the image, not the title.
Details and caveats in the 4,161-pin study.
Description
Two or three plain sentences that say what someone gets if they click, using the words they would search for. Pinterest is a search engine, so write the way people search, not the way you would caption a photo. If the pin carries an affiliate link, add a disclosure such as “#ad” here; the disclosure generator gives you wording.
Link
The page you want people to land on: a blog post, product page or affiliate link. Pins that linked to blog posts earned 1.7× the outbound clicks of pins linking straight to Amazon products in our data. For affiliate links, check where the link really lands with the link checker.
Board
Pick the board whose name matches the pin’s topic, or create one. Board names count for search too; the board name generator has 200+ ideas.
Topics, alt text and the AI label
Tag up to 10 related topics so the pin reaches people browsing those ideas. Add alt text that describes the image for people using screen readers. If the image was made or changed with AI, Pinterest has a Mark as AI-modified toggle for that.
Make the image (no design skills needed)
A pin is a billboard someone sees while scrolling with their thumb. Simple usually wins:
- Vertical 2:3, 1000×1500 pixels. Taller pins get cropped; square ones look small. Check yours with the pin size checker.
- One headline, large enough to read on a phone. If you squint, you should still get the topic.
- High contrast: dark text on a light area or light text on a dark overlay. Avoid grey on grey.
- One focal point: either the photo or the text leads.
- Your own photo when you have one. A real product or dish reads as trustworthy; generic stock does not.
- Readable fonts. Script fonts are hard to read small.
Make more than one pin per link
Once you can make one pin, make several for the same link. In our 15,412-pin study, a link with a single pin got a median of 10 impressions, while the first pin of a set got 18–21 and later ones still got 12–14. Change the angle and the headline each time, not just the background, and schedule them across days rather than all at once. See the study.
That is the slow part to do by hand. Paste a link into the free pin generator and you get a finished 2:3 pin with its title, description and alt text written for that page; with a free account you get several different angles at once.
